Varicose Veins and spider veins: What You See on the Skin May Only Be the “Tip of the Iceberg”

#WhyDoVaricoseVeinsDevelop? What you see on the skin may only be the “tip of the iceberg”

Many people think that visible veins, spider veins, or bulging veins are the whole problem. In reality, what you see on the skin may only be the final result of a deeper issue underneath.

Normally, veins in the legs carry blood back to the heart through tiny vein valves, which help keep blood flowing upward and prevent backward flow (Left image).

When these valves become weak or damaged, blood can flow backward and pool inside the veins. Over time, this increases pressure in the veins and causes them to enlarge or become visible (Right image).

This may lead to:

✔Bulging varicose veins

✔Spider veins or visible surface veins

✔Aching, heaviness, leg fatigue, or swelling

✔Skin discoloration, itching, or in some cases chronic ulcers

The important point is that the veins you see on the skin may only be a sign of an underlying cause, such as valve failure in a larger vein (for example, the saphenous vein).

Treating only the visible veins without identifying the source may lead to:

❌Recurrence of veins

❌New visible veins developing later

❌Persistent symptoms such as heaviness or swelling

#Ultrasound – a Venous Duplex Scan Ultrasound- help identify the underlying cause by assessing blood flow and checking whether deeper vein valves are functioning properly. This helps guide more personalized and appropriate treatment planning.
